Reed privacy policy

Last updated: October 26, 2026

Reed is a family reading app made by Tyrannosaurus Tot LLC ("we", "us"), the children's bookstore and creative studio at 113 W Brookland Park Blvd, Richmond, VA 23222. This policy explains what Reed collects, why, where it goes, and the choices you have. It covers the Reed iPhone app and the service behind it. Our online store and website are covered by our store privacy policy. Questions go to hello@tyrannosaurustot.com.

The short version

  • One grown-up signs in with an email address. Kids never sign in and have no accounts.
  • Reed stores what you put in it: your family's name, the readers' names, the books you scan, and the readings you log.
  • There are no ads, no advertising trackers, and no analytics kits in the app. We do not sell personal information.
  • The camera is used only to read a book's barcode. Reed does not take or keep photos.
  • You can delete your account and everything in it from inside the app, any time.

What we collect

Your account. Your name, your email address, and a password, which is stored only in scrambled (hashed) form. When you sign in, we record the time, the IP address, and the kind of device, so we can spot sign-ins that aren't you.

Your family. The name you give your household and the first names (or nicknames) you type in for each reader, plus a colour for each. Readers can be adults or children. Reed does not ask for a child's age, birthday, photo, school, or anything else about them.

Your books. The ISBN of each book you scan or search for, and the title, author, cover image, and page count that come back for it. Books you add by hand are stored the same way.

Your reading. Each reading you log: which book, which readers, when it started, and how long it lasted. Your daily reading goal. Which books are marked finished, and any notes you write about a book.

From the store. If your family holds a Tyrannosaurus Tot membership, we may mark your Reed family as a member so the app can show member features when they exist. We set this ourselves, at the counter or from your store account; Reed does not collect payment details.

What we do not collect. Reed does not read your contacts, location, photos, or other apps. It does not record audio or video. It does not use advertising identifiers.

How we use it

  • To run the app: show your library, keep your goal and streak, draw your monthly calendar and wrap-up, and sync all of it between the app and our server so it is there when you reinstall or change phones.
  • To look up books: when you scan a barcode, the ISBN is sent to our server, which asks a book database for the title, author, and cover. Only the ISBN leaves your phone for this.
  • To keep your account safe: sign-in records and rate limits protect against password guessing.
  • To answer you when you write to us.
  • To understand, in aggregate, how Reed is used, using counts in our own database rather than a third-party analytics product.

We do not use your reading data for advertising, and we do not sell or rent it to anyone.

Who we share it with

Reed runs on a small number of services, each of which receives only what it needs:

  • Cloudflare hosts Reed's server and database in the United States.
  • ISBNdb receives the ISBN of a book you scan and returns its details. It does not receive your name, your family, or your readers.
  • Apple delivers the app through the App Store and TestFlight and handles its own data under Apple's privacy policy.

Links in the app to our website, to bookshop.org, or to Apple Maps open in your browser or in those apps, and their privacy policies apply once you are there. When you make a share card, Reed builds the image on your phone and hands it to the iPhone share sheet; it goes only where you send it. We may also share information when the law requires it or to protect our rights, our customers, or our staff.

Children

Reed is designed to be used by a parent or guardian. A grown-up creates the account and types in the readers' names; children do not sign in, and Reed does not knowingly collect personal information directly from children under 13. Actions that lead out of the app, such as opening our store or deleting the account, sit behind a hold-to-continue gate meant for grown-ups. If you believe a child has given us information directly, email us and we will delete it.

Your choices and rights

  • Edit anything. Rename readers, put a reader away, remove books, and fix or delete readings from inside the app.
  • Delete your account. Open the Account screen in Reed and choose Delete our account. Your family, readers, books, readings, and sign-in details are removed from our database immediately; you receive a receipt you can check. You can also email us and we will do it for you.
  • Access, correction, deletion. Virginia residents have the right to confirm what personal data we hold, correct it, delete it, get a copy, and opt out of targeted advertising, sale, or profiling (Reed does none of those three). We extend the same choices to everyone. Email hello@tyrannosaurustot.com. We will respond within 45 days, and if we decline a request you can appeal by replying to our response.

How long we keep it

We keep your family's data for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account it is removed from our live database right away, and from database backups within 30 days. If we write to you about Reed and you ask us to stop, we stop.

Security

Reed talks to our server only over encrypted connections. Passwords are hashed, sign-in attempts are rate limited, and the database is reachable only through our server. No method of storage is perfectly secure, so we cannot promise absolute security, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.

Changes

We may update this policy. The date at the top tells you when it last changed. Significant changes will be announced on this page or by email.
